Groundworks

Groundworks and preparation on the Wirral

The excavation, the sub base and the compaction. The part of a driveway you pay for and never see, and the only part that decides how long it lasts.

  • Dig depth and sub base stated in writing
  • Edge restraint haunched, not just laid
  • Drainage designed, not left to the border

What is actually under a driveway

A driveway is a structure with a wearing surface on top. The structure is the excavation and the sub base: the ground taken out to a depth that suits the loading and the soil, replaced with crushed stone laid and compacted in layers until it stops moving, and finished to a level formation that the surface is laid on.

Every common driveway failure traces back to this. Settling where the car turns is the base too thin for the point loading. Rippling in tarmac is inadequate compaction. A dip in a line is a service trench backfilled without compaction, often by somebody else years earlier. Blocks rocking near a gully is water washing the fines out of the base. None of those is a surface problem and none of them is fixable by replacing the surface.

It is also the part of a quote that is easiest to cut and impossible to check afterwards. Two quotes for the same drive can differ by a third purely on dig depth and sub base thickness, and the cheaper one will look identical on the day it is finished. That is why our quotes state the dig depth in millimetres, the sub base type and thickness, and the compaction method, so there is something to compare. Often asked about alongside driveway prices, block paving driveways and resin bound driveways.

Depth suited to the ground and the loading

Soft ground and heavier vehicles both want more. A single depth for every job is a number somebody has stopped thinking about.

Compacted in layers

Each layer laid at a workable depth and passed until it stops moving. Tipping it all in and rolling once is not the same thing.

A trial hole where the ground is unknown

An hour of digging beats an argument later, especially where rock, old foundations or made ground are likely.

Why people use us

The number worth comparing

Dig depth and sub base thickness, in writing, is the only honest basis for comparing two driveway prices.

  • Dig depth stated in millimetres
  • Sub base type and thickness stated
  • Compacted in layers, method stated
  • Spoil removed and disposed of properly

Frequently asked questions

Groundworks and preparation: the questions people ask

The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.

How deep should a driveway be excavated?

It depends on the ground and on what will drive on it, which is why a single number for every job is a sign nobody has thought about yours. What matters to you is that the figure is written down, because that is what a cheap quote is quietly reducing.

What is sub base and why does it matter?

Crushed graded stone that forms the actual structure of the drive. It spreads the load from the wheels across the ground underneath. Too thin or poorly compacted and the surface above it settles, whatever that surface is.

What is a trial hole for?

To find out what is actually under the garden before pricing: made ground, old foundations, rock, a soft spot or a drain run. It takes about an hour and it turns a guess into a quote.

What happens to the spoil?

It goes away, and that is a real cost that belongs in the quote rather than appearing later. A typical domestic drive produces a surprising tonnage once it is dug to a proper depth.

Ask anybody quoting you for the dig depth

If a quote does not state the excavation depth and the sub base, there is nothing in it to compare.

About Wirral Driveways

How the work is actually organised

Wirral Driveways takes the job as main contractor and puts the labour and the plant on it. One person quotes it, one person is answerable for it, and you are not chasing a groundworker and a paviour separately to find out who is coming.

What you get is a written scope with the build up stated, a date, and somebody whose problem it is if the date moves.

We install. We do not clean

This matters enough to say on its own page. Cleaning, sealing and re-sanding an existing driveway is a genuine trade and it is not this one. It needs different equipment, different materials and a different way of pricing.

So we do not offer it, we do not quote for it, and when you ask we will point you at wirralexteriorcleaning.com, which does it properly. Saying yes to work we are not set up for would be the easy answer and the wrong one.

What else we will tell you we are not

Structural retaining walls above a modest height, anything involving a highway other than a straightforward vehicle crossing, and tree surgery on a protected tree are all other people's work. All three come up on driveway jobs and all three are worth bringing the right person in for.

No photographs of our work, and why the site says so

There are no job photographs on this site. The slots are placeholders and they are labelled as placeholders. Nothing here is a stock picture presented as a job and nothing is borrowed from another company.

Real ones go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them. The same goes for anything that looks like a customer quote: there is a section built and ready, switched off, until there are real ones with permission attached.
